Born on January 7, 1991, in Ga-Masehlong village in Limpopo, Semenya grew up with three sisters and a brother. She is an intersex woman and possesses XY chromosomes, along with a natural heterogametic testosterone level.
After her victory at the 2009 World Championships, Semenya’s career took an unexpected turn when she underwent sex testing. The following year, authorities cleared her to resume competition, marking a significant turning point in her career.
In 2019, World Athletics introduced regulations barring women with similar conditions from participating in certain events without reducing their testosterone levels through medication. Semenya, determined, appealed these restrictions to the European Court of Human Rights in 2021.
