The Limpopo Department of Sport, Arts and Culture has issued a strong response to allegations made by the Pienaars The Musical Theatre Group, who claimed they were left without accommodation and support during their performance at the State Theatre in Pretoria.
In a media statement released today, the Department refuted the claims and shed light on the situation.
According to the Department, the theatre group allegedly resorted to sleeping in the corridors of the State Theatre, citing a failure by the Department to provide accommodation. However, the Department contends that the group left the province without a prior agreement and should not hold the Department responsible for their accommodation predicament.
The Department said that no promises were made, only a request was submitted, and they do not directly fund artist organizations.
Moreover, the Department emphasized that the Pienaars Theatre Group has received significant government funding, totaling over R1 million.
This funding was provided with the expectation that such groups would work towards self-sustainability in the long run, reducing reliance on government support.
The Department urged the group to take responsibility for its planning and not use the Department as a scapegoat.
The Department called upon South African citizens to support the Pienaars The Musical during their debut performance at the State Theatre, which runs from Monday, October 10th, and concludes on Friday, October 19th, 2023.
