South African Police Service in Limpopo province have effected 1,952 arrests during the multi-disciplinary Operation Shanela conducted across the province.
The operations were conducted between 6 and 12 November 2023 and resulted in the suspects being nabbed for crimes ranging from murder, rape, robbery with weapons other than firearms, sexual offences, stock theft, possession of suspected stolen goods, illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, amongst other offences.
In addition, 381 suspects were apprehended for Contravention of the Immigration Act, and 30 suspects were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, including 124 suspects for drug-related crimes.
During the operations, police seized 103,045 counterfeit cigarette sticks, 35 dangerous weapons, 226.892 grams of dagga, dagga plants, 2.75 grams of Crystal Meth, and 7.138 grams of Nyaope drugs.
Moreover, police confiscated 11 firearms with ammunition, 537,347.5 ml of liquor, 30 knives, including 5 stolen or hijacked vehicles, and 1,984 fines were issued during the operation.
The arrested suspects have already appeared before their local Magistrate courts.
The Provincial Commissioner of Limpopo SAPS, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, is pleased with the positive results that are continuously being displayed by the men and women in blue across the province.
The Provincial Commissioner has also called on communities to partner with the police in their concerted efforts to create safer communities, especially during the safer festive season.
