University Of Limpopo Alumni Raise 8.5 Million To Aid Struggling Students

The UL Alumni and friends of the University of Limpopo have raised over R8.5 million to alleviate the financial burden of 200 students unable to pay for their own fees.

The fundraising event took place at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Johannesburg, Gauteng, on Friday, 24 November 2023. The event, attended by a diverse group of alumni and friends of the University, initially aimed to raise R3 million.

The fundraising target is for students from families with earnings above the threshold set for government funding through the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS). Various sponsors contributed funds ranging from R10,000 to R5 million, with the highest contribution from Standard Bank surpassing the initial target.

UL Registrar, Professor Kwena Masha, confirmed that 200 students have already been identified to benefit from the proceeds. Masha further confirmed that the University will extend financial support to other missing-middle students.

“More similar student funding initiatives will continue throughout the 2024 academic year to support all our academically deserving students facing financial constraints,” he said.

UL Alumni and Convocation President Donald Selamolela also lauded everyone who contributed to the initiative.

“We appreciate those who contributed to this good cause. We welcome contributions of any amount and urge those who were unable to attend the event to reach out to the University and make their contribution,” he said.

UL Vice-Chancellor and Principal Professor Mahlo Mokgalong

UL Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Mahlo Mokgalong, has also expressed gratitude to those who donated on the night.

“We will never abandon the ‘missing middle’ students. We must support them to always achieve their academic dreams. Please join us in funding these students whom NSFAS cannot assist, and whose parents cannot afford their academic expenses. Our gratitude goes to the many friends of UL who have generously donated to aid these students.”
