Limpopo MEC for Sports, Arts and Culture Nakedi Kekana officially launch the 2023 Mapungubwe Arts and Cultural Festival on Tuesday, 05 December 2023, at Meropa Casino and Entertainment World in Polokwane
The Annual Mapungubwe Arts and Cultural Festival is the flagship project of the Department, and it is viewed as a big melting pot of heritage, culture, and tradition of the province.
During this past weekend, the Sekhukhune, Capricorn, and Mopani districts hosted the build up activities, that included cultural parades.
“The build – up activities, served magnificently as a pre – cursor for the main 2023 Mapungubwe Arts and Cultural Festival. We furthermore engaged in the Mapungubwe District Theatre, Comedy, Instrumental Performances and Craft markets. In Capricorn District, the District Mapungubwe Craft Market, in partnership with Polokwane Municipality, had a two – day exhibition during the past weekend at the Paledi Mall, showcasing the unique arts and culture artefacts for the local markets,” said MEC Kekana
In Sekhukhune, Districts festivities also took place in Jane Furse Plaza where Crafters reached out to the local market with artefacts such as beads, sculptures, paintings, pottery that symbolised the rich heritage and culture of the District and the Province as a whole. In Mopani, the exhibition of the artefacts was in Lenyenye Community Hall, where the local people benefited from the richness of the locally produced craft and artefacts.
“As a department, we strive to ensure that this year’s festivities are productive, diverse and envisage to protect, preserve, promote and develop Arts, Culture and Heritage landscape and advance the socio-economic inclusivity and contribution of the Sector,” said MEC Kekana
The 2023 Mapungubwe Arts and Cultural Festival activities commence in this festive season to March 2024 as follows:

- Mapungubwe Music Festival: 16 December 2023
- Mapungubwe Choral Festival: 12-17 February 2024
- Mapungubwe Film and Video symposium- 19-24 February 2024
