Virginia Gupta, 78, former principal of Leolo High School in Praktiseer outside Burgersfort, succumbed to her injuries on Tuesday at Dilokong Hospital after being attacked by her own four dogs.
The incident occurred on Friday, January 19, 2024, at the Gupta’s residence. She attempted to rescue a visitor who was under threat from her dogs.
According to Limpopo police spokesperson Col Malesela Ledwaba, the dogs turned on Gupta when she forcefully intervened on behalf of the visitor who had just entered the principal’s home.
“The woman accompanied by her daughter, intervened to protect the visitor from the dogs’ aggression. In the process, the dogs redirected their attack towards Gupta, causing injuries to her lower body. Her daughter managed to intervene and divert the dogs, allowing Gupta to sustain injuries,” Ledwaba said.
Despite the injuries, Gupta did not seek medical treatment until Monday, January 22, 2024, when she was taken to a local hospital. Unfortunately, she succumbed to her injuries later that day.
The police have since opened a case of inquest for further investigation.
