Second Fatal Bus Accident Claims Five Lives
A cross-border bus, which was reportedly travelling from Johannesburg to Zimbabwe, overturned along the N1-north towards the Nyl Plaza, outside Mokopane.
A total of 5 people – 1 female and 4 males, lost their lives as a result of the accident. The accident happened at around 17h30, on Sunday, 1st September 2024.
Scores of passengers have sustained injuries of varying degrees, in the process, and have been taken to hospitals in Mokopane.
Limpopo MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Ms Violet Mathye has expressed her sadness, ‘at this second fatal accident, which happened In less than 5 days, after the Makhado fatality which also claimed the lives of 10 Zimbabwean nationals, earlier this week’.

She has also registered a concern about these accidents, that are affecting cross-border public transport operators, and appealed to the bus companies to ensure that their drivers are ‘fit for purpose’, as fatigue could possibly have been a cause in this accident.
The MEC has sent messages of condolences to the families of the deceased, and wished a speedy recovery to the injured passengers.
