Polokwane Municipality Rejects False Claims About Festive Lights Spending

Polokwane Municipality has rejected misleading claims circulating on social media regarding its spending on the upcoming Festive Lights event.

A poster circulating online falsely alleges that the municipality plans to spend R15 million on artists for the celebration.

The municipality has categorically denied these claims, calling them a deliberate attempt to mislead the public and sow division for political gain.

In a statement, the municipality clarified that the R15 million figure is entirely false.

“The municipality is not spending R15 million on artists for this event,” the statement read.

“The artists who perform during the Festive Lights are supported by social partners and sponsors, not municipal funds.”

The municipality also stressed that the total costs of the event would not come anywhere near the alleged R15 million.

Polokwane Municipality urged those behind the false claims to act responsibly and verify information before sharing it.

“Spreading false claims undermines the efforts of the municipality and sows unnecessary division,” the statement said.

“Such claims are not only false but also undermine the commitment of Polokwane Municipality to fiscal responsibility and transparency”

The municipality expressed disappointment over the misinformation, emphasizing that it detracts from the positive impact of the event and the efforts to foster community unity.

The municipality also took the opportunity to highlight its ongoing commitment to essential service delivery, particularly in addressing water supply challenges.

“While hosting such events, Polokwane Municipality prioritizes basic service delivery, with water provision at the top of our agenda,” the statement noted.
