Bakkies Not Allowed to Ferry School Children
The Department of Transport and Community Safety in Limpopo has issued a directive to members of the Mankweng Cluster Scholar Transport Organisation regarding the use of bakkies for transporting school pupils.
The members of the cluster attended a workshop hosted by the Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety this week, to learn more about permits and the safety of the children they transport to and from schools.
According to the department bakkies are not intended for ferrying people.
“In terms of Regulation 250 of the National Road Traffic Act (NRTA), no person will be allowed to transport children in the goods compartment of a vehicle for reward,” the department said

“The regulation also prohibits the transport of other persons in the goods compartment of vehicles for reward, unless they are enclosed in a canopy, and are not seated near any goods or tools.”
The department says this regulation is aimed at improving the safety of passengers on the back of bakkies.
Operators who are taking children to school in vehicles which are either unroadworthy, or not designed for person transport (such as bakkies), will need to repair or replace their vehicles.
