Thabo Mokiri has completed his second degree in Bechelor of Art in Communication from the University of Limpopo. His first degree was a Bachelor of Information Science from the same university.
The social media content creator and comedian from the village of Ga Phaahla near Jane Furse in Limpopo says he is grateful for this opportunity as it has not been easy for him.
“It was a challenging experience getting this degree. I’ve been discouraged by so many things, especially people telling me that my degree is useless and that I should study something else that has high employment prospects”
Financial exclusion remains an obstacle for many students in universities and colleges. Thabo says it has been difficult to raise funds. He does odd jobs, performs as an MC and comedian at events.
“The other challenge is paying the tuition fees. I’m trying to raise fund through performances. I have to juggle between gigs, creating content for social media and doing odd jobs. Sometimes event promoters don’t want to pay and that hurts”
He says this will not stop him from pursuing his studies. He plans to enroll in a postgraduate and master’s degree when the opportunity presents itself.
“I’m not really a bright student, but I will definitely continue my studies. I will use all my abilities and opportunities to further qualify myself. I am hoping to do a Masters in Information Studies or Honors in Communications.”
Thabo says he’s not sure what career path he wants to pursue. All he knows is that he’s an entertainer and enjoys doing it
“I’m not sure what I want to do with my qualifications, but if there is a career as a qualified professional entertainer I would definitely pursue it. For now I will collect more certificates and wait for God to guide me.”
