Executive Mayor Mpe Addresses Urgent Water Supply Issues at University of Limpopo Meeting
Executive Mayor Cllr. Makoro John Mpe met with the university management, led by Vice-Chancellor Professor Mahlo Mokgalong, in a committed response to the pressing needs of the University of Limpopo community.
The meeting was attended by memebers of the Mayoral Committee and municipal officials, University management , student representatives and representatives from Lepelle Northern Water.
The engagement focuses on addressing crucial challenges impacting students and staff, with water supply, street lighting and student safety high on the agenda.
This after the University of Limpopo postponed the end-of-the-year examinations due to a shortage of water.
Students took to the streets on Wednesday, marching to the Polokwane Municipality to hand over a memorandum demanding urgent action.

The campus and other areas relying on water supply from the Polokwane Municipality have been experiencing serious water shortage.
In a media briefing, Mayor John Mpe expressed unhappiness that the university postponed exams without seeking help from the municipality.
Mpe emphasized the municipality’s commitment to ensuring the university community has access to essential services.
“We have identified illegal water connections in Mankweng, compromising the pipeline meant to serve our residents. It is our responsibility and in our best interest to deliver water to our people. We cannot allow our municipality to fall behind in its commitment to our residents and institutions.”
The Executive Mayor acknowledged the need for direct and efficient communication channels with the University and the hospitals to provide immediate updates on any disruptions.
The Executive Mayor announced the formation of a specialized task team to address the water issues specifically, led by MMC for Water and Sanitation, Cllr. Alfred Moakamedi.
“This task team will engage with the affected university community and work in collaboration with Lepelle Northern Water to devise sustainable solutions.This approach aims to enhance transparency and reduce the impact of unforeseen challenges,” said Mpe
