Lil Meri’s Tombstone Unveiling Ceremony Set to Commemorate His Legacy

Samuel Malatji, popularly known as Lil Meri Mathopa or the King of Voice from Relela village in Tzaneen, lost his life after a short illness at the age of 22. The shocking news was confirmed by his manager on December 11, 2021.

In commemorating the 2nd anniversary of the death of Lil Meri, a tombstone unveiling will take place this Saturday, December 16, 2023, in Tzaneen (Mapitlula village).

Lil Meri’s community in Bolobedu was significantly affected by an employment crisis in the recent past, leading many youths, including him, to seek alternative means of earning a living.

It was during this challenging period that Malatji discovered his passion for music and became a member of the well-recognized Bolobedu musical group ‘Bad Company.’

He contributed to several songs with the group, including the popular ‘Welcome Again Manizo.’

Subsequently, Lil Meri launched his solo music career, producing hit singles such as ‘Ke Ngwana Wa Motho’ and ‘Melomo ya Batho.’ In addition to his musical accomplishments, Lil Meri excelled academically, pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering at Letaba TVET College and obtaining his N3 qualification.

While not without controversy, including an incident where he was detained by the police for wearing a South African Defence Force (SANDF) outfit, Lil Meri was released after a few days due to his clean past record.

Through his music, Lil Meri conveyed messages of peace to his youthful audience, urging them to eschew hooliganism and community terrorism.
