September is Heritage Month, and the 24th September is Heritage Day, which comme-morates the rich cultural diversity of our country.
The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture Head of Department (HOD) Mme Mapula Daphney Ramokgopa officially launch Heritage Month during a Media Launch held at Meropa Cultural Village on Monday.
The 2022 theme for Heritage Month is “Celebrating the Legacy of Solomon Linda and South Africa’s Indigenous Music”
The Department, in collaboration with other stakeholders planned a series of events for the duration of Heritage Month, including District Build Up festivities in each of the province’s five districts, which will feature cultural exhibitions and performances and the Colloquium taking place on the 20th of September at the University of Venda.
“This year’s celebrations will be zooming in on the life and legacy of Solomon Linda and South African’s Indeginious Music, we call upon the people of the Province to join in and showcase our diverse cultures and heritage to the world”. Said Ramokgopa.
Solomon Popoli Linda is popularly known for composing the song “Mbube,” which subsequently went on to become the breakout hit, “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” and gave rise to the “Mbube” subgenre of isicathamiya. Heritage month 2022 will highlight isicathamiya music and its significant contribution in sport, arts, culture, and heritage.
The main celebrations will be held at Ga-Kgapane on the 24th followed by an International renowned Pageant, Miss Global Heritage at Kalahari Hotel in the vhembe district. The festivities will concluded with a Music Concert on the 25th of September.
