Limpopo Artists Movement in partnership with the Department of Sport and Culture honored ten legends at the 1st Annual Limpopo Legends Awards held at The Ranch Hotel on Saturday.
Legendary radio presenter Bra Max Mojapelo, songstress Yvonne Chaka Chaka, producer and musician Joe Shirimani, actors Murabeli Rasalanavho and Seputla Segobodi were honored with Lifetime Achievements Awards.
Seputla, who was not present to accept his award, said he had never been honored since he began his acting career.
“I have been in the industry for over 30 years and have never been honored. This is special because for the first time in my life I am being honored at home,” said Seputla.
Murabeli Rasalanavho, known as Vho Mukondeleli in Muvhango, said she was humbled by the gesture.
“It’s great to be honored at home. The last time I was honored was on Muvhango where I received a Certificate of Appreciation. It is humbling feeling to be appritiated when still alive”, she said
The late Patrick Shai, Dr Steve Kekana and Bra Paul Mahuma Rapeatsoa recieved posthumous awards. Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe and Faxa Dube received Special Awards.
Limpopo Artists Movement President Mophoza Mashabela siad that the awards are a token of appreciation and that next year they’ll award another group of legends.
“We don’t want to thank our legends when they’re dead. We’d rather honor them when they’re still alive. We have donated R10000 each to our recipients and we hope to raise more money next year to honor another group of legends, ” said Mphoza.
In attadance was the newly appointed Limpopo MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture Nakedi Grace Kekana. She said the LILAs are a necessary platform for recognising Limpopo legends.
“We would like to thank the organisers for creating a platform to recognise our legends. There is no lack of talent in this province. Were a home of legends.”
“We as a government will continue to support such initiatives and use our platforms such as the Mapungubwe Arts Festival where our legends will be able to showcase,” said MEC Kekana.
