Court Rules in Favour of Limpopo Liquor Outlets To Trade Until 02:00

Polokwane, Limpopo, September 5, 2023 – Polokwane High Court has ruled that liquor outlets in the region may continue to trade until 02:00. The judgment was a response to an interdict filed by the Sekhukhune Liquor Traders Association (SLTA) and the Economic Freedom Fighters, challenging the enforcement of the new Act, which came into effect on August 1.

This ruling is a significant victory liquor traders who had faced uncertainty and potential financial losses. However, new liquor license applicants will still be required to adhere to the curfew restrictions.

Limpopo Department of Economic Development, Environment, and Tourism (Ledet) MEC, Rodgers Monama, cited concerns over the impact of alcohol consumption on community stability, violence, and domestic abuse as reasons for implementing the new Act.

In response to the court’s decision, Mphoza Mashabela, the chairperson of the Limpopo Artists Movement, expressed his satisfaction and relief. He highlighted the importance of community responsibility in maintaining safety in and around nightclubs, emphasizing the need to prevent any escalation of conflicts to the courts.

Mashabela also urged government departments to engage with affected industries and stakeholders before making decisions that impact their livelihoods. He stressed the significance of respecting the industry and the role of the justice system in upholding fairness.

“The Department will learn not to undermine the entertainment industry. Nothing should be decided without involving us. We hope the people of Limpopo will drink responsibly and refrain from drinking and driving. We don’t want more accidents caused by irresponsible residents.”

Ledet spokesperson Zaid Kalla said he reserved comment until the judgment is publicised.
