NANAS is a proud Motswana cultural ambassador on the rise
Kegomoditswe Phiri, known by her stage name NANAS, is a celebrated artist from the Bakwenas tribe, hailing from Signal Hill Village in Mafikeng.
The 41-year-old musical journey began early, inspired by a rich cultural upbringing.
Her mother affectionately called her “NANAS,” meaning “something sweet,” a reflection of her vibrant personality and spirit.
NANAS joined a traditional music group at Mmabana while still in primary school, quickly showcasing her talent on international stages.
She represented Botswana at festivals in Italy in 1996 and Brazil in 2008, solidifying her love for music and her cultural roots.
In 2018, she launched her solo career, blending traditional Setswana music with jazz elements.
Her debut EP, O Jele Eng?, set the tone for her artistic journey, followed by successful releases like Maru a Pula and MMakodi.
Recognized for her contributions, NANAS won the PANSALB Best Setswana Artist award in February 2024.

Her dedication to youth development in music earned her a Certificate of Appreciation in July 2024.
Musically, NANAS draws inspiration from icons like Thandiswa Mazwai and Mam Letta Mbuli, crafting songs that celebrate her cultural heritage.
Her recent collaborations with the traditional Setswana group Nomtiti showcase her ability to fuse traditional and contemporary sounds.
Currently promoting her latest single, Ke Kwena, NANAS is also planning exciting collaborations, including one with Abbey Nkamodira.
Beyond her music, she dreams of establishing an art center in her community to nurture young talent and preserve cultural heritage.

NANAS has received a nomination for the prestigious SATMA Awards in the category of Best Setswana Artist for 2024.
This recognition underscores NANAS’s impact and contribution to the Setswana music landscape.
