New Thabazimbi Municipality Administrator Appointed

The MEC for Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs, Basikopo Makamu officially presented the newly appointed Administrator Mr Mavi Paul Maseko to Thabazimbi Municipality.

The municipality was dissolved under Section 139 (1) (c) of the Constitution of South Africa, the section that allows intervention to ensure effective governance.

The MEC met with Stakeholders, Labour unions as well as the Management of the municipality.

He described Mr Maseko as a renowned and established figure in issues of local government.

“Mr Maseko has been deployed across the country by various Local Government Ministers as a Section 154 support resource and as an Administrator since around 2013. Maseko brings with him vast experience and expertise and is accompanied by an equally experienced team which will surely restore governance in the Thabazimbi Municipality. He has worked with municipalities in the North-West, Free State, Gauteng, Eastern Cape and KZN.

He is one of the National Facilitator on the Senior Managers Induction Programme (SMIP) on Local Government Finance and Governance Matters” said MEC Makamu.

Mr Maseko holds an Executive masters in business administration degree from De Montfort University in the UK amongst some of his qualifications.

He has shown his capability to broker and mediate relations between labour and administration, as well as for his skill in establishing operational systems within municipalities.

His support staff includes Senior and Middle Managers from Provincial Treasury, CoGHSTA, MISA and other Provincial Departments.

The team will be dealing with Finances, Technical, Governance, Legal and other important service delivery functions. Mr Maseko and the 12 team members will start with their new responsibilities immediately.


“People from this Municipality need the services they have been denied for a long time. We trust that should he or any team member go off track, the community will be the first to inform me as the MEC and as an acting Mayor at this Municipality” said MEC Makamu.

Limpopo Premier, Dr Phophi Ramathuba, has officially met with Maseko

Premier Ramathuba expressed her confidence in Maseko’s capabilities.

“We needed someone who is balanced, experienced, and focused to deal with the turmoil that has engulfed Thabazimbi. Our instructions to Mr Maseko are clear: he must get that place right, remain uncompromised, and lead this team with firmness. The people of Thabazimbi need the services they have been denied for a long time. We trust that should he or any team member go off track, the community will be the first to inform us.”

“We are positive that this team shall bring peace and calm to the situation in Thabazimbi,” she added.

The 12-member team commenced its work today and is expected to be introduced to the staff and the community of Thabazimbi within the week.

In addition, the team comprises experts in engineering, technical services, legal matters, governance, and finance. The remaining members are internal employees from the Municipal Infrastructure Support Agency (MISA), Provincial Treasury, and COGHSTA.
