Ntombhi Ya Mutsonga host successful first Indigenous Language Champ Awards

Ntombhi Ya Mutsonga Foundation award-winning praise poet, author and cultural activist.

The 1st Annual Indigenous Language Champ Awards, held in partnership with Old Mutual and the Ntombhi ya Mutsonga Foundation, took place at the Malamulele Community Hall on June 16, 2023.

This prestigious event aimed to celebrate linguistic excellence, promote literature, and recognize the importance of linguistic diversity.

The awards honored outstanding teachers and learners in Indigenous Home Languages, showcasing their dedication to preserving and promoting these languages.

The winners included Makondo Kurisani and Maswengani Gavaza as the Best Indigenous Spelling B winners, Baloyi Kuhluka and Hlungwani Tshamisekani as the Best Indigenous Poet winners, Chauke Michele and Nyoni Nyowela as the Best Indigenous Reader.

Participants and winners represented schools such as Shikundu High School, EPP Mhinga High School, Xihlovo Primary School, Ximixoni Primary School, Magangeni Primary School, and Khatisa High School.

ILCA presented 90-year-old Xitsonga musician Mr. HW Makhubela with a special honorary award, acknowledging his remarkable contributions to the industry. This recognition marked a significant milestone in his career.

King Hosi Mhinga graced the ceremony with his presence, encouraging the importance of preserving Indigenous languages and embracing cultural diversity.

The event showcased the richness and importance of these languages, encouraging their continued appreciation and safeguarding for future generations.

Over 400 individuals attended the 1st Annual ILCA Awards, including parents, teachers, and community members.

It celebrated the achievements of teachers and learners who work tirelessly to preserve their cultural heritage through language.
