Polokwane Municipality Executive Mayor, John Mpe, has cancelled tenders for low-maintenance services.

Mpe said the move shifts responsibility for maintenance tasks to municipal workers.

He said the decision seeks to resolve challenges with service quality and adherence to contractual obligations by external contractors.

“There are various areas where we have stopped tenders. We have decided to utilize our own staff and own workers within the environment and we are confident that this is part of us saving money,” said Mpe

Mpe stated that the Leeto La Polokwane Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, which has faced challenges with taxi associations, will now be safe, reliable, and convenient for the people, following the resolution of issues with the taxi associations.

“Leeto La Polokwane Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, a flagship project for effective public transport, nears completion with the General Joubert Street bus station reaching its final stages. This development aims to improve commuter convenience and stimulate local economic activities,” he said

He said the Seshego Water Treatment Plant plant is now operational and now supplies an additional 10 Ml/day to the Seshego reservoir.

Addressing challenges of misuse, Mpe highlighted unauthorized car washing activities at the Thabo Mbeki offloading zone, leading to cleanliness issues and safety concerns.

“To mitigate this, the municipality plans to fence off the area to preserve its intended use for bus and minibus taxi loading, while redirecting car washers to designated facilities,” added Mpe

He said that the municipality has initiated catalytic projects such as the Netcare Akeso Psychiatric Hospital, the Provincial Theatre/Arts and Culture Hub, and a new TUT Campus, aimed at stimulating economic growth and job creation within the community.

“These efforts underscore Polokwane Municipality’s proactive approach in meeting the needs of its residents while laying a foundation for future growth and development,” said Mpe

Mpe said infrastructure, the Roads and Stormwater Directorate successfully utilized its budget for the 2023/24 fiscal year, completing paving projects in various clusters such as Seshego, Aganang, Moletjie, and Sebayeng/Dikgale.

He said rehabilitation efforts are also underway for key routes like Dorp, Church, and Bodenstein streets and that renovations are underway at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium to accommodate the upcoming football season.
