Polokwane Municipality Increases Tariffs for the 2024/25 Financial Year
Polokwane Municipality Adjusts Tariffs Amid Economic Pressures.
Polokwane Municipality has announced revised tariffs set to take effect from 1 July 2024, marking adjustments across key service sectors for the upcoming financial year.
In a statement released by Polokwane Executive Mayor, Cllr Makoro John Mpe, said the changes are aimed at addressing socio-economic challenges and aligning with current economic conditions, reflect both regional and national influences.
The municipality detailed the following adjustments:
- Water Services: Tariffs will increase by 9%, reflecting adjustments from Lepelle Northern Water. The municipality will continue to subsidize the first 6 kilolitres per household.
- Refuse and Sewerage Services: A 6% increase has been implemented, slightly above inflation but below the CPI plus 1% benchmark.
- Electricity Services: Residents will face a 12.72% increase, in line with Eskom’s approved price hike by NERSA. The municipality will provide 100 kWh of free electricity monthly to qualifying indigent households, exceeding the national standard.
- Property Rates: A 3% increase has been set, based on a new valuation roll effective from the new financial year. This reflects an 11% rise in property values since 2019, with specific adjustments communicated to property owners.
Mayor Makoro John Mpe emphasized the municipality’s efforts to balance the needs of consumers amidst challenging economic conditions.
“We always take the plight of our consumers into key consideration when determining tariffs, particularly for water and electricity.”
