The South African Traditional Music Achievements Awards (SATMAs) in partnership with the Department of
Culture, Sports and Recreation in Mpumalanga will host the 17th Annual SATMA Awards on the 1st October 2022 at Mbombela Stadium.
Professor Patrick Lumumba will deliver Lucky Dube memorial lecture at the University of Mpumalanga on Saturday 01, October at 10am. Lucky Dube’s Family and the band that played alongside the late Reggae legend is expected to attend the memorial lecture.
“One of our mandates as the SATMA Awards is to honor legends in the South African music and entertainment industry, especially those individuals that have made a positive impact in preserving our heritage and culture. This speaks to this year’s theme “My Culture, Your Culture, One Nation”, ” said Keletso Dlamini SATMAs Media and Artist Co-Ordinator.
Lucky Philip Dube wasborn on 3 August 1964 in Ermelo, Transvaal (now Mpumalanga). He was a South African reggae musician and Rastafarian. During his prime he recorded 22 albums in Zulu, English and Afrikaans in a 25-year period. He was South Africa’s biggest-selling reggae artist.
He was murdered on 18 October 2007 during an attempted hijacking in Rosettenvile, south of Johannesburg. Lucky Dube used his music to fight injustice and inspire social change.
The band will take the audience on a trip down memory lane as their way to pay homage to the Reggae icon.
