Pupils Discharged After Suspected Food Poisoning in Malamulele

Thirty-five learners from Makahlule Primary School in Ntlhaveni Block H, Malamulele, have been discharged from hospital after consuming what is suspected to be poisonous food.

Limpopo Department of Education said it is investigating the alleged incident of food poisoning at Makahlule primary school.

22 learners were rushed to a nearby clinic in the afternoon when they started vomiting and later transfered to Malamulele Hospital. They were treated and discharged.

A second group was rushed to hospital, complaining of headaches and stomach cramps.

The department says it’ll take food samples for testing, to find out if the school nutrition programme, could have been the cause.

It also says it will check the snacks sold by vendors outside the school premises.

“The department will take food samples that learners consumed on Wednesday for testing to determine if the school nutrition rations were responsible,” Kgoffe explained.

In addition to the school food program, officials will inspect snacks sold by vendors outside the school premises, with the help of health inspectors, to rule out other potential sources.

MEC for Education Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya reassured the public that the situation is under control. “We call on parents and the education community not to panic. The matter will be thoroughly investigated to ensure the safety of all learners,” she said.
