Lehokoe Crystal Tlali with Soweto Gospel Choir
A distressing video of former Soweto Gospel Choir member Crystal Tlali Lehakwe has stirred emotions on socail media.
The once-renowned singer, celebrated for her rendition of the popular hymn “Modimo Re Boka Wena,” was spotted wandering the streets, raising concerns about her well-being.
Jerry Maya posted a video on Tik Tok of Lehakwe roaming the streets of Qwaqwa in the Free State.
Maya, who works for the Department of Agriculture & Rural Development, came across the gospel singer while attending an event.
“This is Lehakoe. She used to sing for the Soweto Gospel Choir. Please help her,” he captioned the video.
In the clip, Lehakwe appeared barefoot, untidy, and with a cigarette in her hand.
Singing for the camera, the she admitted to once being a famous singer and that she is the orginal founder of Soweto Gospel Choir.
She said that when they began, they were only five members.
When asked what happened to her, Lehakwe said, “You tell me.”
It’s unclear when Lehakwe left the Soweto Gospel Choir and what transpired thereafter.
Lehakwe was born and raised in the Orange Free State and joined the choir when she was just 16.
At the tender age of 18, Lehakwe has travelled across Australia, Europe and the Far East. Her achievements are all the more remarkable considering her upbringing.
