Two Toddlers Die After Allegedly Consuming Leaves from a Tree
Two two-year-old toddlers from Mokgoto Village, Zebediela in Lepelle-Nkumpi Municipality have passed on, after consuming leaves from a Cascabela Thevetia tree, commonly known as Yellow Oleander.
Katlego Machaba (2), and Koketso Kekana (2),were amongst five children between the ages of 1 to 5, said to have been playing “Malapana” outside one of the bereaved families home, when they consumed the deadly leaves. The incident happened on 17 January 2025.
The two children are said to have later shown signs of not being well, presenting symptoms such as vomiting, sweating and running stomach.
One child was taken to Mokgoto Clinic, where he was certified dead. While the 2nd child was taken to Zebediela Hospital where he passed on.

The other three children from the two affected families, were later taken to hospital for observation at Zebediela Hospital, and have since been discharged.
The Executive Mayor, Cllr Mamedupi Teffo sends messages of condolences to the affected families.
“We urge our communities not to allow children to play under this tree or consume its fruits or leaves,” said Teffo
The Cascabela Thevetia tree is popular for its vibrant yellow flowers that bloom all year round.
It is native to tropical and subtropical regions and is found in many of our villages. It is toxic and dangerous.
